OVERVIEW
- We aim for ambitious and aspirational delivery of scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
- Our curriculum seeks to develop an understanding of the nature, processes, and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help students understand and answer scientific questions about the world around them. We seek to ensure that all students appreciate their science education and see the value in being scientifically literate adults.
- The curriculum provides foundational knowledge and skills for all students, including those who are inspired to study science at university and beyond.
- Our strong focus on enquiry and practical science seeks to develop subject skills and scientific literacy. Practical work is used purposefully as part of a learning sequence.
- Students have opportunities to read in lessons, both independently and aloud.
- Science-specific key words are explicitly unpacked and modelled when introduced. Visual aids, etymology, and morphology are used to support students’ learning of new vocabulary. Disciplinary literacy is a focus.
- Expert guidance enables students to access a variety of qualification pathways at Key Stages 4 and 5, in the sciences and beyond.
- Core maths skills for science are a priority and are taught explicitly. Students have multiple opportunities to practice e.g. graphs, changing the subject of the formula, calculating ratios.
- We prepare students for life beyond Wyedean School by challenging, motivating and inspiring them; leading to a lifelong interest in learning.
- We promote local, national and global awareness, and recognise the employment needs of the Forest of Dean and Chepstow communities. As such we endeavour to equip students to succeed in employment post school age.Key Stage 3 - 5 Information
