Politics

We aim to foster an interest in current affairs and political developments at a local, national and global level.

  • We wish to develop students into politically informed citizens who actively participate in political processes and use their knowledge and understanding to help inform others.
  • We aim to develop the skills required to enable students to participate in informed debates, being able to appreciate different sides of an argument and support their opinions with relevant and pertinent evidence.
  • We aim to enable students to feel more confident in speaking in front of a group and being able to present their arguments coherently.
  • Our A level course was chosen as it seemed the most relevant and current of the courses on offer, and it has been designed to engage students as well as give them a detailed knowledge of the theories and ideologies that underpin modern politics alongside an understanding of how political processes and participation works in practice.
  • We enable students to see how government and politics operates in the UK, at national and devolved level, as well as in the USA and make meaningful comparisons between the two. They will also study the development of key ideologies and their relevance to many different nations and cultures, making this a subject that fosters global values.
  • The written demands of the course will engender an ability to structure an argument effectively, write persuasively and reach thoroughly evaluated judgments.

Studying Politics provides students with an understanding of the powers, rights and responsibilities of politicians, judges and citizens. Students will gain an appreciation of different arguments on a wide range of political issues. Politics is an ever changing subject that develops a keen interest in current affairs and political developments. It will provide students with the ability to debate, support their argument and reach judgments on key issues.
