On 6th November, thirty GCSE and A-level Computer Science students took apart in a workshop delivered by Cyber Security Associates (CSA). This workshop allowed students to complete projects teaching vital cyber security skills. The projects have been created in partnership with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) Cyber Schools Hub.
The students were outstanding; they worked in teams maturely and confidently. They demonstrated resilience, determination and a high level of programming skills. All students were a true credit to Wyedean School.
The projects allowed students to bring learning to life and extended learning outside the classroom. They were fully immersed into real world applications of Cyber Security and developed a clear understanding of possible cyber threats and the implications.
We are extremely thankful for this opportunity provided by CSA and for allowing us to connect education to industry, bring learning to life!
Here are the student’s reflection comments to fully demonstrate the impact of the visit.
“The Cyber Pi Projects experience delivered by the CSA was mind blowing in every aspect. From understanding how one could target a system and potentially disrupt it, to understanding exactly how one achieves it. This was incredible to learn about this first hand, and get experience doing so. Additionally, it was extremely educational, teaching us the other side to cyber security; which we had not have been exposed to.
What I learned:
I learned how to set up an ‘Alfa’ network.
Therefore, I learned how to DOS a network, and precisely how simple it is to do so for a general network.
Furthermore, I learned exactly how important it is to protect a network from potential cyber-attacks and perhaps give myself an idea with how to combat it.
I must thank everyone who made this experience possible, and especially CSA for giving their time to educate us.”

“On Tuesday 6th November, we had the opportunity to participate in a project by CSA. This project was, in summary, a fantastic experience. We were given a ‘Cyber Pi’ kit, which included everything we needed to explore many areas of cyber security. The first thing we tried to do was to create a Wi-Fi jammer. We did this by making the computer spam the router with requests. As a result, the router crashed due to it not being able to handle so many requests. Next, we tried a Wi-Fi scanner, which worked with similar success. Overall, I loved the experience because it was fun and it is something we will allow us to develop in the future careers”

“I thought that the Cyber Pi Projects were really good. My group focused on building the Wi-Fi jammer, which was a challenge. The videos were very useful and easy to follow. The wish we had more than the hour on the projects so that we could try to build more things. I was really inspired by the projects and wanted to learn more.”

“I really loved this workshop and completing the projects. When doing the Cyber Pi Project, I helped my team to make a Wi-Fi jammer. I enjoyed doing this because it allowed me to have fun whilst coding. This project really taught me skills that I would love to apply in the future.”

“When doing the Pi Project, we used the pi to produce a door alarm. We worked as a team to assemble to components and complete the tasks. I especially enjoyed the fact that there was a video, guiding you through the process. I loved the project and wish I had more time in the workshop to complete more.”
